Sustainability in the Details

October 17, 2019, 8:30 am - 10:00 am Free

Big moves and new technology get a lot of attention in the practice of sustainable design, but the careful detailing of the building envelope—walls, windows, roofs, and where they come together—can have an even larger impact on a building’s energy efficiency. Come hear about Holst’s approach to the careful design, detailing, and execution of the building envelope. Through case studies of completed projects in Portland and beyond, Kim Wilson, Cory Hawbecker, and Jake Watkins will provide a behind-the-scenes look into Holst’s design process.

Speakers:

Kim Wilson, AIA, Partner and Quality Director

In her two decades at Holst, Kim has been instrumental to its growth and key in establishing the studio’s reputation for quality design and execution. She has led many of the firm’s most iconic projects. As Quality Director, she translates her high standards for quality and her collaborative work ethic into ongoing technical training and mentoring. Kim is a key resource for each team, ensuring that the quality of technical execution aligns with the high quality of design. She is a registered architect and has a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Science from Oklahoma City University.

Cory Hawbecker, AIA, LEED AP, CPHC, Senior Associate and Sustainability Director

As Senior Associate and Sustainability Director at Holst, Cory advocates for sustainability for projects of varying types, scales, and contexts. His extensive knowledge of alternative energy technologies, material sourcing, and methods to optimize energy performance is invaluable to clients and the Holst design team. Cory was project architect on the Karuna House, the first building in the world to achieve MINERGIE-P-ECO, Passive House PHIUS+, and LEED Platinum certifications. He is sought after for his sustainable design expertise and frequently lectures in Portland and the Pacific NW. He is a registered architect, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a Certified Passive House Consultant.

Jake Watkins, Design Staff

Jake joined Holst in 2016 after graduating with a Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Vermont. He served as job captain for the recently completed 72Foster affordable housing for REACH Community Development, leading the implementation of a carefully detailed building envelope that supports long term energy efficiency. He believes the foundation of positive and successful design is a consideration of place, people, and longevity.
