Sustainable Building Week 2020 – A Virtual Experience!

2020 was supposed to be the year that finally fulfilled our Jetson’s dreams of getting the (electric) jet pack, and even if we didn’t get the flying car, we’d settle for a self-driving (electric) car. Instead, we get our toilet paper and disinfectant sent to our doorstep with no contact delivery – but hey! We get our legal weed delivered too! Now, that’s the future!

We have an opportunity to reshape the new future and redefine how we want to live and sustainability leaders are not losing sight of this. We envision clean air, not because the economy comes to a screeching halt, rather because we’re meeting our climate goals through building energy code advancements, policy requirements, innovation through low-carbon products, unique building reuse opportunities and the continued progress of high performance building metrics.

SBW is keeping this vision of the future as 2020 is the third annual Sustainable Building Week (SBW). Like so many other events, we’re using the tools of the future to go virtual! SBW 2020 will be expanded to a 2-week format with three events per day. This will provide for rich content and meaningful connectedness while not overburdening our stamina for “screen-time.” Several key events are locked in, including:

  • AIA Oregon COTE’s Green Champions Summit
  • Solar Oregon’s virtual building tours
  • AIA happy hour
  • ReBuilding Center’s Salvage Showdown
  • Education forums from Portland Green Schools, Build Local Alliance, Portland Materials Transparency, ILFI Collaborative, OSU, Carbon Leadership Forum

And we’re not even done with the line-up! Stay tuned as we continue to update the schedule on our newly refreshed website.

Holding a virtual event means more people can easily access a wide range of sustainable building learning opportunities. And, we get to do what we love – shine a light on Portland’s sustainability prowess. As we expand our marketing efforts beyond Portland, collaborators and sponsors will have greater reach. Together we can do our part to reduce the built environment’s impact on climate change, especially as we lock arms and partner with added communities.

Want to participate in SBW 2020 as a Collaborator? Joining SBW as a collaborating organization has never been easier. Even non-Portland organizations can join. Collaborating requires only a commitment to holding an event during SBW that addresses sustainability in the built environment and promoting the week in general.

Want to support SBW 2020 as a Sponsor and hold an event? This year, SBW is offering two tiers of partnership with benefits at each level. Private organizations can hold events during SBW by sponsoring as a Harvester. Please visit our Support page for more detail about how you can participate.
