SBW Finds Efficiency in Hybrid Mode

As we slowly emerge from COVID hibernation, with hybrid and in-person learning, and on-site and remote workers navigating a new normal, we hope SBW 2021 will offer solace and opportunities to connect with sustainability-minded friends and colleagues. We are optimistic that as we transition back, we will be able to apply lessons learned from the last two years of climate disaster and the pandemic with renewed energy towards problem solving and community building. Portland has always been a beacon and it is pivotal that we not only remain that light for others, but that we shine brighter than we ever have.

SBW 2021 will return and run from October 11th through October 16th. This will be our 4th annual week of events, and the line-up promises to be exceptional, as Portland has some of the foremost experts on sustainable design. Last year, we were trapped behind screens, but this year we expect ~30% of the 20+ events over the course of 6 days to be in-person, allowing us to slowly (and safely) transition back to in-person events. Of course, all events will follow the most recent OHA guidelines, ie., masking & distancing, etc. to keep you safe.

As part of the in-person offerings, this year we also have a few fun outdoor events. One of these events, “Into the Woods,” is being hosted by the Build Local Alliance and will include a hike through Tualatin Hills Nature Park. This has been a long-standing event at SBW and is one of our favorites. Come to this event to learn more about local tree species, their uses, and sustainability features. Plus, see humans in 3-D!

To provide some cohesion between events, this year we will be focusing on a specific theme for each day: Energy, Water, Materials, Health, and Community. For example, Electrify Now will be hosting an event on our Health-themed day featuring a session about Induction Stoves and Indoor Air Quality. Be sure to check out the Calendar of Events and website to learn more about these themes and the week of events.

SBW would not be possible without the partnership of our Collaborators and Sponsors. Harvester Level Sponsors for SBW 2021 include Mahlum, Henneberry Eddy Architects, Skanska, PAE, New Buildings Institute, Sustainable NW Wood, Bassetti Architects, BORA, PGE, Green Hammer Design Build, Eteriors, Brightworks Sustainability, Gensler, Walsh Construction, Energy Trust of Oregon, and Birdsmouth Construction.

Whether you choose to participate virtually or in-person, please share your stories and help spread the word. Remember to use #SBW21, @KeepPDXGreen on Twitter and @SustainableBuildingWeek on Instagram whenever posting on social media.

THANK YOU!

We look forward to seeing everyone in October.
