A Case Study on Building Electrification – Exploring Upfront Costs and Utility Bill Savings

October 11, 2023, 10:00 am - 11:30 am

This presentation will include information about how much it cost to electrify a home with example costs for installing a heat pump, heat pump water heater, heat pump dryer, and induction range as well as the cost to install a rooftop solar + battery system. It will also show how one’s monthly utility bills will change after building electrification, winter electric bills will be significantly higher and likely higher than the natural gas bill it replaces. However, over the whole year there are savings. Lastly the presentation will cover how improvements in the building enclosure via insulation and air sealing upgrades greatly flattens and reduces the energy consumption of a building particularly in the winter months.

Edward Louie works at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a Building Energy Efficiency Research Engineer. Outside of work he is an energy efficiency guru and enjoys using his home as a laboratory for testing energy efficient products. He has installed 240v heat pumps, 120v heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, heat pump dryers, switched his range from gas to induction, and crawled into his attic to do air sealing. He is excited to share these experiences with you.
