Tour: Center for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Youth Academic & PE Building

Join us for a tour of the new School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth, a 35,000-sf mass timber K-12 academic and 15,000-sf physical education project on the historic Washington School for the Deaf campus. The new buildings consolidated the K-12 grades into one structure, added the Hunter gymnasium and was specifically designed for learning environments that prioritize ASL-English bilingual instruction. The school remained fully operational during construction, utilizing two other campus buildings for classes, which were later demolished once the new building was completed.

The tour will focus on the intersections of sustainability, resiliency, diversity, and education. This integrated progressive design-build project will showcase the thought and care that went into designing Deaf-centric learning environments—environments that increase engagement, reduce stress, and foster a home-like learning atmosphere. We will tour and discuss the sustainable features of the building, including the use of natural materials, daylighting, and energy-efficient systems. Additionally, we will walk the site of the refurbished geothermal plant that is slated for construction of new and increased capacity systems, and we will discuss how the academic building was designed for future tie-ins.
