Building to Net Zero

October 16, 2019, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

In this event, hosted by Walsh Construction Co. for Sustainable Building Week, presenters will focus on meeting net zero energy standards in conjunction with designing and building relative to extreme weather and climate change. The new Operations Center recently completed as a part of the Northwest Housing Alternatives campus redevelopment was designed by MWA Architects and constructed by O’Neill/Walsh Community Builders (OWCB) to achieve Net Zero Energy Building Certification. This means the building will employ energy efficiency measures and onsite renewables to meet all of its heating, cooling, and electricity needs. It is the first such project in the city of Milwaukie.

Presenters Destin Ferdun from Northwest Housing Alternatives, Afton Walsh from Walsh Construction Co. and Kristina Hauri and Bill Lanning from MWA Architects will share considerations, insights, and lessons learned when designing and building zero energy structures.

This is a free event which will include a tour, presentations and Q&A.

Northwest Housing Alternatives: Destin Ferdun
NHA is deeply committed to constructing sturdy, well-planned properties expected to provide viable affordable housing opportunities for decades. With an emphasis on the “win-win” approach of reducing utility burdens for their residents and properties while limiting impact on the environment, NHA seeks to utilize best practices in environmental stewardship through construction while focusing on long-term durability within the scope of each project.

MWA Architects: Bill Lanning/Kristina Hauri
Founded in 1988 as a minority owned firm, MWA remains minority owned today. They approach design inclusively — informed by their history, they embrace social equity as a foundation of sustainable design. From housing to civic infrastructure, they are committed to designing built environments that strengthen our communities, and consider the health and well-being of the planet.

OWCB (O’Neill/WALSH Community Builders): Afton Walsh
OWCB builds projects with purpose. OWCB, created in August 2011, is a formal partnership between O’Neill, Inc., a registered MWESB firm, and Walsh Construction Co. The partnership co-exists with its parent companies, builds on both companies’ strengths, facilitates opportunities to connect more deeply with MWESB firms, and provides O’Neill more exposure to processes and procedures for success on larger projects. We use our collective strengths to further our mission of creating opportunities for sustainable community building.
