The ZERO Coalition (ZERO) and The Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority welcome you to join us for a stimulating evening where we will view short films related to the intersection of equity and housing. The films will address topics such as redlining, displacement, gentrification, discriminatory lending practices, how racism in housing policies continues today, and action-oriented ways to address these issues. Passive House Northwest will host a happy hour to follow the screening. This event is part of Sustainable Building Week. Find more events and info here.
The June Key Delta Community Center (JKDCC) is a unique space; a grassroots project by a small group of dedicated African American women. Once an old Arco gas station, it was reimagined as a green and sustainable building, designed to provide educational and training opportunities and to host meetings and events for the surrounding community. The JKDCC pursued the Living Building Challenge and met its stringent requirements, the highlights of which included:
The brown field was transformed into a productive urban garden.
Net-zero energy was consumed.
Stormwater was to be stored, processed to potable standards, and used onsite. Black water effluent was to be treated and infiltrated on site.
Only non-toxic, sensitively sourced, and recycled materials were installed.
Equitable hiring and training opportunities were created throughout construction.

ZERO advocates for policies that are aligned with our mission, to equitably decarbonize the built environment in Oregon. ZERO consists of 35+ member organizations working together to forward this mission. We’re organized into committees that work toward our common goals in specific ways: through policy advocacy, communications activities that create demand and awareness, technical tool development, and continuous focus on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) to bridge gaps to affordable sustainable development for all Oregonians. ZERO offers opportunities to advance JEDI awareness and action in the sustainable building industry and other industries that align and intersect with our work.
